Karnataka Promotes Millet-Based, Low-Sugar Diet in Government Offices

The Karnataka Health Department has rolled out a new set of dietary guidelines to promote healthier food habits within government offices. The advisory encourages the inclusion of millet-based dishes and low-sugar, low-fat food options in official meetings, events, and workplace cafeterias.

The initiative aims to replace commonly served snacks and beverages with more nutritious alternatives. Departments have been advised to opt for fibre-rich foods such as millets, fresh fruits, salads, sprouts, and nuts, while also encouraging healthier drink choices like buttermilk and green tea instead of sugary beverages.

For official functions and larger gatherings, the use of millets and other traditional, locally sourced foods is being strongly recommended. The guidelines also suggest reducing the use of refined ingredients by choosing options like brown rice and freshly prepared meals to improve overall nutritional quality.

Additionally, the advisory discourages fried foods, processed snacks, and high-sugar items. It also highlights the importance of maintaining hygiene and adopting eco-friendly practices, including minimizing single-use plastics and supporting local food suppliers.

Through this move, the department aims to integrate better eating habits into everyday work culture, contributing to improved health and well-being among government employees.
