From Fruits to Millets, Falling Prices Strain Rayalaseema Agriculture

Farmers in the Rayalaseema region are going through a difficult phase as crop prices have dropped sharply, severely affecting their incomes. The unexpected fall in market rates has made it hard for many growers to even recover their basic investment in cultivation.

Banana farmers are among the most affected. Prices have fallen steeply compared to earlier levels, making harvesting unviable. In several cases, farmers are leaving their produce in the fields because the cost of labour and transport is higher than the price they would receive in the market.

Sweet lime growers are facing a similar situation across districts like Anantapur, Nandyal, and Kadapa. Despite it being peak harvest season, returns have been disappointing, with even good-quality produce failing to attract fair prices.

The impact is not limited to horticulture crops alone. Farmers cultivating millets, pulses, and turmeric are also reporting poor market demand and declining prices, adding to the financial strain.

With losses mounting, many farmers are expressing concern over their livelihoods and are calling for timely government intervention to stabilise prices and provide better market support.
