District Collector Raja Gopal Sunkara recently emphasized the health benefits of minor millet and encouraged people to include more millet-based foods in their diets. Minor millets are known for their rich nutrient profile, including essential vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants, which contribute to overall health and well-being.

To highlight the importance of nutrition, the Social Welfare and Women Empowerment Department organized a special event called 'Millets Vizha' at Vellalar College for Women in Thindal. This event was part of National Nutrition Month, which runs from September 1 to 30. The event aimed to raise awareness about the nutritional benefits of millet and promote their inclusion in daily diets.

During his visit to the Malliamman Durgham settlement in Kadambur Hills, Mr. Sunkara had the opportunity to sample nutritious foods made from millet. He shared his experience with school students, emphasizing the value of millets. He explained that millets are rich in antioxidants, which are compounds that help protect the body from harmful free radicals and support overall health. Additionally, millets are cost-effective and can help address various health issues due to their nutrient density.

Mr. Sunkara also discussed broader government initiatives aimed at improving public health. He mentioned that the government not only focuses on providing basic services and creating job opportunities but also on supporting and developing children’s talents. For young children under six who have nutrient deficiencies, the government provides nutritious powder, and their growth is monitored monthly through regular checks of their weight and height. The overarching goal is to ensure these children grow up healthy.

In his address, Mr. Sunkara encouraged students to promote the benefits of millet within their families and communities. He urged them to advocate for including millets in their relatives' diets, helping spread awareness about their health benefits.

During the event, Mr. Sunkara visited various stalls featuring millet-based foods and sampled some offerings. Earlier in the day, he launched an awareness rally about millets at the Government Higher Secondary School in Thindal, to further educate the public and encourage the consumption of millet-based foods.
