A Farmer Training Program called “Millet Production and Processing under Changing Climate Scenarios” started on September 16, 2024, at the ICAR-Research Complex for the Eastern Region in Patna. Sponsored by ATMA, Gaya, Bihar, the program was opened by Dr. Anup Das, the Director of ICAR-RCER, who lit a lamp and began the session with the ICAR song.
Dr. Das spoke about the importance of growing millets, especially due to climate change, since millets can handle tough weather. He also highlighted the health benefits of millet, which are full of essential nutrients. He encouraged farmers to include millets in their crop rotation and to use sustainable farming methods like zero tillage and conservation agriculture to increase productivity.
Next, Dr. Kamal Sarma, Head of the Division of Livestock and Fisheries Management, talked about the health benefits of millet, focusing on their low glycemic index and overall nutrition.
Dr. N. Bhakta, the Course Director, explained the training program and emphasized the significance of millet farming, especially in Gaya, where water is scarce.
The program included a discussion where farmers shared the challenges they face in growing millets. In response, the course directors adapted the training to help solve these specific problems.
The training was led by Dr. Sanjeev Kumar, Head of the Division of Crop Research, along with Dr. N. Bhakta and Dr. Rakesh Kumar. They were supported by coordinators Dr. Santosh Kumar, Dr. Dhiraj Kumar Singh, Dr. P. K. Sundaram, Dr. Kumari Shubha, and Dr. Abhishek Kumar Dubey. A total of twenty-six farmers from Gaya participated in the training.
The program concluded with Dr. Rakesh Kumar, Senior Scientist, thanking everyone for their contributions to the success of the event.
