At the vibrant Karsog Nalwar Fair in Himachal Pradesh, millets took center stage—celebrated not just as a food, but as a symbol of health, heritage, and sustainability. This timely spotlight echoes the United Nations’ declaration of 2023 as the International Year of Millets, aiming to rekindle interest in these ancient grains and their role in modern nutrition.
A key figure in this movement is Padma Shri awardee Nekram Sharma, who brought traditional varieties like 'kodra' millet into the limelight. His mission is to reintroduce these forgotten grains to local diets and farming practices, emphasizing their nutritional value and cultural roots.
Supporting this grassroots revival, the Himachal Pradesh government has launched several initiatives to boost millet cultivation. From distributing free seed kits and providing subsidies to forging better market linkages, the state is targeting around 4,500 hectares for millet farming—marking a significant push towards sustainable agriculture.
Beyond the grains, the fair also served as a cultural hub, featuring folk performances, informative exhibitions, and interactive sessions. It beautifully blended tradition with awareness, reaffirming the region’s commitment to nurturing its agricultural legacy while promoting holistic well-being.
