For the first time in Kokrajhar, the Food Safety Department, Kokrajhar, under the Commissionerate of Food Safety, Assam, in collaboration with the Kokrajhar District Administration, launched the ‘Eat Right Mela’ to promote healthy eating habits. The event kicked off today at the Kokrajhar Government HS & MP School Playground.
As part of the program, District Commissioner of Kokrajhar, Masanda M. Pertin, officially launched the walkathon, which saw participation from students, NCC cadets, and local citizens. This was followed by an inaugural meeting and an exhibition focused on the importance and benefits of millet-based food products.
In his keynote address, Bilifang Brahma, Designated Officer of the Food Safety Department in Kokrajhar, emphasized that Kokrajhar was one of the districts in Assam chosen to host the 'Eat Right Mela' in celebration of International Millet Year. The event aimed to raise awareness about the nutritional benefits of millets and their potential in tackling food security and climate change. He highlighted that millets, known for their rich nutritional value and disease-preventive properties, are gaining popularity worldwide. Millets help combat diseases such as diabetes and cancer, and their consumption should be a regular practice for better health. The event featured a display of millet-based food products at 30 stalls to promote a healthy lifestyle.
Brahma explained that the ‘Eat Right Mela’ was an initiative of FSSAI, with the goal of encouraging healthy eating habits, food safety awareness, and sustainable nutritional practices. Technical sessions on local food products, especially millet-based ones, as well as demonstrations on food adulteration testing, were also part of the event. Additional activities included a quiz competition and a millet-based cooking contest.
The inaugural ceremony was addressed by several key figures, including Pratibha Brahma, Chairperson of the Kokrajhar Municipal Board; Samiran Baruah, Retired Designated Officer of Food Safety, Assam; Dr. Sunil Paul, Chief Scientist at KVK Gossaigaon; Dr. Anuk Islary, Assistant Professor at CIT Kokrajhar; and Dilip Chetia, Secretary of the Kokrajhar Merchant Association. The event was also attended by the Joint Director of Health Services, Kokrajhar.
