The government of Madhya Pradesh is planning to develop and sell a range of millet-based food products under a new brand. The initiative aims to promote the consumption of millets and create better income opportunities for farmers in the state.
Officials said that about five millet products will be produced through the Sri Anna Federation and marketed under the brand name “Narmada Millets.” These products are currently being tested to ensure good quality. Once the testing process is completed, the products will be produced in larger quantities and made available in the market.
The proposed products include millet flours that can be used to prepare popular dishes such as idli, dosa, upma, and khichdi. Millet biscuits are also expected to be part of the product range. The initiative focuses on encouraging people to include millets in their daily diet while also creating new business opportunities in the millet sector.
The millets used for these products will be purchased directly from farmers and processed in dedicated units across the state. Farmer Producer Organisations (FPOs) are also involved in the process so that farmers receive better support in production, processing, and marketing.
The state government has also announced procurement prices for millet varieties such as kodo and kutki to motivate farmers to grow more millets. Districts like Dindori and Mandla, which are known for millet cultivation, are expected to play an important role in this initiative. The programme is likely to strengthen the millet value chain and increase the popularity of millet-based foods.
