McDonald’s India Launches Nutritious Multi-Millet Bun for Just Rs 10

McDonald’s has unveiled its new Multi-Millet Bun in India, marking a major step toward healthier fast-food choices. This innovative addition is a collaboration between McDonald’s India and the Central Food Technological Research Institute (CFTRI) in Mysuru, which functions under the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR). The Multi-Millet Bun is designed to offer a nutritious upgrade for burgers, aligning with India’s growing focus on millet-based diets.
Made from a wholesome blend of five millets — jowar, bajra, ragi, proso, and kodo, the bun combines taste and nutrition in a single serving. Customers can now choose this millet bun for any McDonald’s burger by simply selecting it during their order for a small additional charge of just Rs 10. Currently, the millet bun is available at select McDonald’s outlets in India, with plans to expand across all ordering channels soon.
Mr. Sanjeev Agrawal, Chairman of McDonald’s India (North & East), emphasized the brand’s commitment to supporting national initiatives and sustainable food choices. He stated that the introduction of the millet bun not only enhances customer nutrition but also supports local farmers. Agrawal added that this initiative, first introduced in Mumbai, reflects McDonald’s ongoing effort to collaborate with government programs to boost India’s economy and health-conscious food ecosystem.
Union Minister Dr. Jitendra Singh hailed the launch as a “proud moment for Indian innovation,” noting how a global food giant like McDonald’s is embracing indigenous technology developed by CSIR-CFTRI. He described it as a transformation where “Videshi turns to Swadeshi,” symbolizing India’s growing influence in global food innovation and nutrition. The minister highlighted that this milestone supports India’s Millet Movement, which gained international recognition after the UN declared 2023 as the International Year of Millets.
The Millet Movement aims to revive millet cultivation and consumption across India. Supported by the government, it promotes millets as sustainable crops that require less water and are rich in nutrients. The initiative also focuses on boosting rural livelihoods and reducing dependence on water-intensive grains like rice.
Health experts have long praised millets for their benefits — they improve heart health, regulate blood sugar, and aid in weight management due to their high fibre and protein content. Millets are also gluten-free, making them an ideal option for those with gluten sensitivity. Additionally, they promote healthy digestion, strengthen bones with calcium-rich varieties like ragi, and provide essential antioxidants that support immunity.
McDonald’s Multi-Millet Bun is thus more than a menu innovation — it represents a blend of health, sustainability, and Indian tradition, taking a global brand closer to local roots while promoting a smarter, healthier lifestyle.
