Millets on the Move: India’s Packaged Food Revolution Takes Root

Once tucked away in rural kitchens, millets are now stepping into the limelight of India’s packaged food industry—bringing with them a fusion of tradition, health, and innovation. By 2032, this humble grain’s modern makeover is expected to power a market worth over USD 91 million, more than double its size in 2022.

Why Millets? Why Now?

In a world where consumers are chasing cleaner labels and ancient grains, millets have found their moment. Known for being gluten-free, protein-rich, and planet-friendly, they’re ticking all the boxes for a new generation of health-conscious Indians.

But this isn't just a trend—it’s a transformation. With a 9.2% CAGR, millets are making their way into supermarket shelves in the form of idli mixes, cookies, porridges, and even energy bars.

South India Leads the Pack

Where health meets heritage, South India has emerged as a frontrunner, claiming 44% of the national millet-packaged food market in 2022. From dosa premixes to traditional ragi malt, this region blends nostalgia with nutrition—paving the way for mainstream millet adoption.

Consumers Are Changing, So Is the Market

Adults, particularly in urban centers, are driving demand. Over 82% of the market’s buyers in 2022 were adults seeking healthier daily staples. And while children are still warming up to millet’s earthy flavors, brands are now working overtime to win them over with chocolate millet cookies and millet-based breakfast cereals.

Not Without Hurdles

Despite its promise, the millet movement faces headwinds:

  • Premium pricing continues to be a barrier, especially in price-sensitive markets.
  • Taste and shelf life issues also mean that not every consumer is ready to make the switch from wheat or rice.

The Rise of Smart Millet Brands

Legacy giants like ITC, Marico, Tata Soulfull, and Quaker are entering the millet game with large-scale production and branding muscle. At the same time, agile startups like Slurrp Farm, Naturally Yours, and Urban Millets are winning hearts with storytelling, sustainability, and snackable innovation.

What’s Next?

India’s millet-based packaged food story is more than just a health trend—it's a cultural revival backed by government initiatives, changing diets, and a desire for sustainability. The journey ahead will be about balancing affordability with appeal, and innovation with integrity.
