The Government of India has approved ₹793.27 crore in incentives under the Production Linked Incentive Scheme for Food Processing Industry to support the processing of millet-based products. This assistance has been provided to 29 companies, including eight large firms and 21 small and medium enterprises, to encourage the production and marketing of millet foods.
In addition to the PLI scheme, the government is promoting millet processing through programmes such as Pradhan Mantri Kisan SAMPADA Yojana and the PM Formalisation of Micro Food Processing Enterprises Scheme. These initiatives aim to improve food processing infrastructure and help entrepreneurs involved in millet-based businesses.
Under the PMFME scheme, millets have been selected as the “One District One Product” in 21 districts, helping to encourage local processing and value addition. By December 31, 2025, about 4,612 micro food processing units working with millet products had received approval, with subsidies totaling ₹91.20 crore.
Government support has also led to strong growth in the millet sector. The sales value of millet-based products by companies under the scheme increased from ₹35 crore in 2020–21 to about ₹814 crore in 2024–25. At the same time, millet procurement rose significantly, reflecting growing demand and expanding market opportunities for farmers and food processors.
