Recently, India's millet initiative received a significant boost with the successful development of a super-nutrient energy bar by a research team led by Hon’ble Vice Chancellor Prof. Dinesh Chandra Rai from BRA Bihar University. Their achievement was published in the prestigious international journal Food Chemistry: Molecular Sciences, renowned for its Impact Factor of 4.1 and Q1 rating, highlighting the potential benefits of this innovative product. The team, under VC Prof. Rai's leadership, included Dr. Arvind Kumar from Banaras Hindu University and Mr. Manish Kumar Singh from Mizoram University.
Prof. Rai emphasized the critical significance of this research, highlighting millet as a drought-resistant crop valued in India for its nutrition and sustainability. However, substantial millet byproducts are wasted during processing, prompting his team to develop a solution.
India’s Millet Mission promotes millet production and consumption, focusing on cereals like ragi, sorghum, bajra, and small millets under the Poshan Mission campaign. India also supports the MIIRA initiative to globalize millets and attract investment. Prof. Rai expressed pride in his team's contribution to India’s Millet Mission.
The newly formulated energy bar is a nutritious snack rich in fiber, protein, vitamins, and minerals, crafted from millet and foxnut. It contains bioactive compounds with health benefits such as supporting heart health, reducing inflammation, managing diabetes, and potentially combating cancer.
This innovation reduces food waste and supports India's millet mission, aiming to strengthen the millet industry and increase farmer income. Research must prioritize farmer welfare by enhancing sustainable practices and market insights. Prof. Rai concluded with an emphasis on supporting farmers through innovative agricultural practices.
Faculty from BHU and BRA Bihar University congratulated Prof. Rai and his team, including Prof. Omprakash Roy, Prof. B S Rai, Dr. Aprajita Krishna, Prof. Rajeev Jha, Prof. Rajeev Kumar, Dr. Sanjay Sinha, Dr. Shartendu Shekhar, Dr. Navin Kumar, and others, for their groundbreaking research.
