TCI and ICRISAT Discuss How Millets Can Strengthen India's Food Security Network

Experts at a debate on "Promoting Millets in the Public Distribution System" in India, organized by ICRISAT and the Tata Cornell Institute (TCI), stressed the importance of making millets a permanent part of the PDS to improve food security and nutrition. They pointed out that millets' potential in the PDS has not been fully tapped.

At the event held at ICRISAT’s Hyderabad campus, Dr. Prabhu Pingali, Chair of the ICRISAT Board and Director of TCI, said that the expert discussions would help shape a more effective and future-ready PDS system in India.

"Millets have the potential to transform our food systems, but this can only happen if we bring together policy, science, and action. To make this happen, TCI is working with its partners to understand the 'true cost of the PDS'—looking at its environmental, economic, and nutritional impacts and finding areas for improvement. For example, by helping states source locally grown millets through ICRISAT’s efforts, we’re not just supporting farmers, we’re also strengthening the PDS to provide healthier and more sustainable food for the most vulnerable communities," he said.
