The agriculture department of Himachal Pradesh has received a prestigious certificate of appreciation for its commendable efforts in promoting millets.

Chief Minister Thakur Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu praised the Himachal Pradesh Agriculture Department for earning a prestigious certificate of appreciation, acknowledging their exceptional efforts in promoting millets. Agriculture Minister Prof. Chander Kumar also lauded the state's farmers for their commitment to millet cultivation.

The department was honored with a certificate of appreciation by the Union Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare for its initiatives during the International Year of Millets 2023. This year was designated to underscore the manifold benefits of millets, including nutrition, health, environmental sustainability, and economic development.

"In response to global challenges such as hunger, malnutrition, population growth, limited natural resources, and climate change, millets represent a promising solution. These crops are cost-effective, nutrient-rich, and resilient in diverse and adverse climates with minimal inputs," the spokesperson emphasized.

Recognizing the significance of this initiative, the agriculture department orchestrated various statewide activities to promote awareness and encourage millet cultivation, aiming to educate and inspire farmers to engage in millet farming.

Further initiatives encompassed distributing seeds and mini-kits, conducting farmer training programs, organizing farm gate sales of millets, and hosting millet food festivals. Informational materials on millet cultivation and recipes were also widely disseminated to enhance public awareness. Consequently, millet cultivation expanded across all districts of the state, covering 1,526 hectares and yielding 983 metric tonnes," the spokesperson highlighted.
