Researchers from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Roorkee have created edible cups made from Kodo millet, offering an eco-friendly alternative to plastic packaging. These cups are strengthened with guar gum and hibiscus powder to improve their structure and durability.
The research, led by Prof. Kirtiraj K. Gaikwad and Bhushan P. Meshram, was recently published in the journal ACS Food Science & Technology. The study highlights how Kodo millet, a drought-resistant and underused grain, can be used to make strong, biodegradable cups that help reduce plastic waste.
Key Highlights of the Research:
"Our aim is to provide a practical, eco-friendly alternative to single-use plastic packaging while promoting underused crops like Kodo millet," said Prof. Gaikwad. "These edible cups are safe to eat, biodegradable, and reduce long-term environmental damage."
The research has gained attention since its publication, with 257 views and an Altmetric score of 3 in just 12 days, showing rising interest in sustainable packaging ideas.
Real-World Impact:
These Kodo millet cups support global sustainability goals and offer businesses a smart way to cut down on plastic use. They are especially useful in the food and beverage industry, where single-use plastics are a major issue.
